The Leaning Tower of Pisa

The Leaning  Tower of Pisa, in Italy,is famous because of it’s  tilt. An inscription in the right hand corner above the entrance says construction began  in 1173.It was built as a bell tower for  the cathedral to  help  wake up people to go to church. It was also built to show the wealth and power of Pisa.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa  started to  tilt when they got to the 3rd floor.  It started because the subsoil was too weak, some of the subsoil sunk down. They tried to make  the tower stand straight and tall by constructing 1 side taller than the other.

It has   300s well worn stone steps going up the spiral staircase. Each floor is circular  and has columns, pillars and arches too.At the top of the tower you can see panoramic views around the city of Pisa
